Peru: New night curfew hours in Lima and Callao to be in force starting today, Jan 7

Starting today, January 7, the night curfew in Metropolitan Lima, Callao, and other 23 regions of Peru that are at the high alert level —due to the increase in COVID-19 cases— will run from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m.

This was stipulated by Supreme Decree No. 002-2022-PCM, which was published on Thursday in the Official Gazette El Peruano.

According to said document, in addition to Lima and Callao, the provinces that will move to the high alert level are Ica, Pisco, Cusco, Cajamarca, Jaen, Piura, Sullana, Sechura, Talara, Trujillo, Pacasmayo, Chiclayo, Santa, Puno, Huaura, Bagua, Chachapoyas, Tacna, Huancayo, Satipo, Mariscal Nieto, Ilo, and Tumbes.

It should be noted that the new restrictions will come into effect one day after the publication of such decree in El Peruano and will run until January 16, 2022.

The rest of the provinces in Peru are at the moderate alert level, which means the night curfew in said areas will run from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m.

Exemptions

During the curfew, strictly necessary personnel —who participate in the provision of health services, medicines, financial services, home food delivery and pick up services, as well as in the supply of grocery stores, supermarkets, markets, itinerant markets, and warehouses— are exempt from the measure.

Also exempted from curfew restrictions are those who ensure the continued delivery of water, sanitation, electricity, gas, fuel, as well as telecommunications services and related activities.

The staff in charge of cleaning and solid waste collection, funeral services, cargo-merchandise transportation and related activities, land and air passenger transportation, economic resumption-related activities, and valuables transportation —as stipulated by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MTC)— are also shielded from the order.

During this curfew, pharmacies and drugstores are allowed to operate according to the provision thereon.

Written, radio, and television press members are allowed to be outside during curfew hours provided that they carry their special transit permits, respective badges, and ID cards for identification purposes. The authorization includes mobile units that transport them.

The people who require urgent or emergency medical attention —because their health is at serious risk— are allowed to circulate as well.

As is known, the Government of Peru has recently announced new restrictions for Lima, Callao, and other provinces across the country that have moved to the high alert level due to the increase in COVID-19 cases within their jurisdictions.
