Peru: Health Ministry issues epidemiological alert due to rise in COVID-19 cases in Lima

The Ministry of Health (Minsa) has issued an epidemiological alert to public and private health facilities nationwide, given the increase in COVID-19 cases from the Omicron variant in Metropolitan Lima observed in recent weeks, which affects 10 districts across the Peruvian capital.

The National Center for Epidemiology, Prevention and Disease Control (CDC Peru) issued a statement to alert public and private health facilities nationwide over the rise in COVID-19 cases driven by BA.2.12.1, a sub-variant of the Omicron strain.

The alert aims to strengthen the epidemiological surveillance, the organization of health services, the compliance with preventive measures, and the timely detection of outbreaks for a timely response to control the spread.

The document is dated May 19 and is addressed to all health establishments of the Ministry of Health (Minsa), the Social Health Insurance System (EsSalud), Armed Forces, Police, and the private sector, which are responsible for implementing, disseminating, and assessing it.

It states that an nationwide increase in the percentage of positivity and in symptomatic cases was observed in epidemiological week 16-2022, due to the rise in cases across 10 districts of Metropolitan Lima, which persists today.

The aforementioned districts are Downtown Lima, Santiago de Surco, Miraflores, San Isidro, La Molina, Magdalena del Mar, Jesus Maria, San Borja, San Miguel, and San Juan de Lurigancho.

Likewise, the National Health Institute (INS) reported that the BA.2.12.1 lineage makes up 36.4% of total sequenced samples collected in epidemiological week 19-2022.

Moreover, it stated that BA.2.12.1 has been found in samples from the regions of Lima and Lambayeque, which make up a large share of the population and constitute links to other regions across the country.
