on Friday participated in the signing ceremony of the agreement for the transfer of Majes-Siguas Project to the Central Government, marking the beginning of its unblocking after nearly 15 years of stalled works.
"With the transfer of Majes-Siguas to the Central Government, we are fulfilling the promise made to our sisters and brothers in Arequipa (region), taking on the challenge of moving the project forward," Mrs. Boluarte stated at the ceremony.
"We will initiate the necessary technical and budgetary actions to enhance the infrastructure of Majes-Siguas, and concurrently, we will execute the defense of ongoing arbitration processes," she added.
In this regard, the top official stated that the ultimate goal is the execution of this project, which will irrigate Arequipa's agricultural zones and transform the region into the largest agro-exports hub in the Peruvian south.
The president asserted that the Executive Branch will meet the established deadlines in order to inaugurate this long-awaited project as soon as possible.
"It is important to respect the timeline. We will meet the scheduled dates," she emphasized.
Mrs. Boluarte noted that the mega-irrigation project is forecast to require a historic investment S/7 billion (about US$1.863 billion) so as to expand the agricultural frontier by adding 38,500 new hectares of cultivation.
Similarly, the president underscored that this public work joins the list projects unblocked under the current administration.
"Majes-Siguas confirms that our Government is unblocking and reactivating the country's major water infrastructure projects. We did so with Chavimochic in La Libertad (region), Alto Piura in Piura, Iruro in Ayacucho and Arequipa, and Chinecas in Ancash," she underlined.
Agriculture strengthening
Mrs. Boluarte detailed that more than 71,000 free-of-charge title deeds have been delivered to farmers in the country's most remote rural areas to date, including 70 for native communities and 22 for farming communities, benefiting over 370,000 Peruvians.
"Furthermore, we formalized more than 268,000 hectares, providing legal certainty to farmers and facilitating their access to credit. Thus, we increase the value of their land and ensure that their families can inherit them securely," she pointed out.
The president indicated that between July 2023 and July 2024 over 1,000 business plans were implemented by agricultural organizations seeking to implement technological enhancements that contribute to the sector's competitive development.
Mrs. Boluarte also highlighted the implementation of 246 entrepreneurship plans for rural and indigenous women, benefiting over 2,700 entrepreneurs in Peru.
"Our government is prioritizing support for family farming, taking into account that over 90% of producers belong to small-scale agriculture," she concluded.
This event took place at the Government Palace in the Peruvian capital, Lima.
