Lima 2019: Final medal count for Peru sets new record

The Lima 2019 Pan American Games were a resounding success and have become a milestone in Peruvian sports.

The South American country has achieved a record-breaking result at these Games after winning 39 medals in total: 11 gold, 7 silver, and 21 bronze.

There is no doubt the sport that stood out the most at Lima 2019 was surfing, in which Peru grabbed seven medals: three gold, three silver, and one bronze.

The surfers who topped the podium in their respective disciplines were Benoit 'Piccolo' Clemente (men's longboard), Daniella Rosas (women's open surfing), and Lucca Mesinas (men's open surfing).

Athletics has also delivered medals for the country, as Gladys Tejeda and Christhian Pacheco (marathon) won gold in front of a large Peruvian crowd in Miraflores district.

Karate produced 10 medals —4 gold and 6 bronze— for Peru, the largest number compared to other sports.

The most prominent representatives were Alexandra Grande (gold in women's under 61 kg), Ingrid Aranda (bronze in individual women's kata), and Mariano Wong (bronze in individual men's kata).

Other sportsmen and women who excelled at Lima 2019 include Diego Elias (squash gold in men's singles), Natalia Cuglievan (waterski gold in women's tricks), Claudia Suarez and Kevin Martinez (Basque pelota gold in women's and men's individual Peruvian fronton), Marko Carrillo (shooting bronze in men's ind. 25m rapid fire pistol) and Nicolas Pacheco (shooting bronze in men's ind. skeet).
