Tourist bus service between Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo) and the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu returned to normal this morning, following the clearing of rocks that had fallen earlier today, Monday, November 2, onto a section of the Hiram Bingham Road.

The landslide, which also blocked the Hidroeléctrica–Machu Picchu Pueblo railway line near kilometer 111—in the "Puente Ruinas" sector, close to Machu Picchu Pueblo—occurred sometime between last night and the early hours of this morning.

Local authorities, along with railway and bus company personnel, mobilized to carry out removal operations. The Machu Picchu District Municipality confirmed that bus services have resumed.

Heavy machinery, such as a backhoe, was used for the cleanup, and with the help of work crews, "it was possible to restore vehicular traffic for the buses that transport passengers to this major tourist destination," a statement noted.

Meanwhile, Ferrocarril Transandino S.A., the railway concessionaire, reported that the Hidroeléctrica–Machu Picchu section of the line remains temporarily closed. Technical personnel and machinery are on-site to assess the damage and carry out the necessary work to restore safe conditions in the affected area.

Some delays and adjustments

Railway operations to and from Machu Picchu Pueblo—originating from or arriving at the Ollantaytambo station—continue to run as scheduled; however, there may be some delays, as well as adjustments to passenger boarding and disembarking locations.
