Peruvian tennis player Ignacio Buse (ATP No. 33) began his campaign at the Rolex Paris Masters—the season’s last Masters 1000 event—on a high note, securing a decisive 6-2, 6-4 victory over Belgium’s Zizou Bergs (ATP No. 39) this Monday.
The result holds special significance for Peruvian tennis: Buse has become the first player from Peru to claim a win at the Paris Masters 1000.
Furthermore, this marks his first victory at the Masters 1000 level on a hard court, adding to his achievements in the most demanding tournaments on the circuit.
The match also served as a chance for redemption. In October, at the Shanghai Masters 1000, Bergs had won their previous encounter 6-0, 6-3.
This time, Ignacio turned the tables with a compelling performance, taking control of the match and leveling his head-to-head record against the Belgian.
The win comes at a crucial moment for Buse, who returned to the winner’s circle on the ATP circuit following a five-match losing streak.
His last victory had come at the US Open; consequently, this result in Paris provides a much-needed boost, helping him regain consistency and confidence as he concludes a season marked by significant progress.
A new challenge
The next test for Buse will be an extremely demanding one. In the second round, he will face Russia’s Daniil Medvedev—ranked 5th in the ATP and the tournament’s fourth seed—who advanced directly to this stage after receiving a first-round bye. This will also be the first meeting between the two on the main tour.
Medvedev reached this stage directly by virtue of his status as a seeded player, while Buse secured his spot after defeating Bergs.
In the second round, Buse will face Russian player Daniil Medvedev, currently ranked world No. 5 and the tournament's fourth seed.
The match will take place this Wednesday, November 4, with the specific time yet to be confirmed by the organizers of the Rolex Paris Masters.
Initially, Ignacio Buse was also scheduled to compete in the doubles draw alongside Italy’s Luciano Darderi. They were set to face the French pair of Benjamin Bonzi and Arthur Rinderknech. However, the Buse/Darderi duo withdrew from the match, meaning the Peruvian player will now focus his efforts solely on the singles draw.
