Defense Minister Walter Astudillo highlighted the fact that Peru is hosting the "Sentinel Resolute 2024" multinational exercise —in which seven countries, including Peru, participate— as it will enable these nations to collectively confront any common threat that may arise.

This event was inaugurated at La Joya Air Base in Arequipa region, southern Peru, on Monday.

The government official affirmed that this activity "means an important step to strengthen friendship ties through training and allows for establishing real trust measures among countries in this region."

Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and France also participate in Sentinel Resolute 2024, which is conducted in collaboration with the United States of America.

"This multinational exercise, taking place across multiple domains, such as land, sea, air, space and cyberspace, will enable us to improve our interoperability and be in a position to collectively confront any common threat that may arise, both in this region and globally," Minister Astudillo said at a press conference.

In turn, Peru's Joint Command of the Armed Forces (CCFFAA) Chief, Army General David Ojeda, indicated that more than 1,700 people from the invited nations will participate in the exercises. Similarly, these (exercises) will take place in different zones located in the cities of Lima, Arequipa, Iquitos, and Pucallpa.

He explained that the operations to be carried out are intended to obtain joint and combined capabilities among various navies.

"With these capabilities, we will be in a position to confront any threat that may arise, both within our territory and those that go against the security of (other) nations (…) we are seeking to maintain that security and tranquility in our countries," Ojeda underlined.

Among those threats -he indicated- are illegal logging, illegal mining, and forest pollution.

Second consecutive year

Peruvian Air Force (FAP) General Commander Carlos Chavez Cateriano underscored that Peru has been chosen once again to host the multinational exercise.

Chavez Cateriano explained that last year the Sentinel Resolute event was planned in just 90 days –instead of one year, as is usual– since it was initially planned that another country would host it.

At that time –he specified– 1,000 people participated in the event. Besides, the corresponding exercises were carried out correctly and adequately, without any risk to safety or incident.

He affirmed that the exercise, in addition to measuring military-related capabilities, also includes the exchange of experiences in other areas, such as search and rescue, combat medicine, cyber defense and cybersecurity, among others.
