President Jose Jeri on Friday expressed his support for the Peruvian National Police (PNP), stating that his government is open to dialogue and maintains an open-door policy.
"There is full support from the Government of Peru for its National Police. Indeed, yesterday during the Council of Ministers meeting, we talked about the measures we were going to implement," he said during the ceremony to recognize the agents who took part in a march last Wednesday.
The top official indicated that it is not enough to say "we are going to strengthen our police and continue improving internal processes. No, that must go hand in hand with a larger budget, concrete actions, and providing the necessary tools to (address) the challenges we have today as a country."
"That is essential, and it is a commitment of the Peruvian Government, which I have the honor to lead today. In the coming hours, we will surely announce the first measures in that regard," he added.
The President reaffirmed that his duty as Head of State is to uphold the country’s institutional framework, an objective that —he emphasized— must be shared by all sectors.
"We are a government open to dialogue, an open-door government. Yes, we are. But the fact that we are open to dialogue does not mean we do not know how to make decisions, when we have to make them," he expressed.
On behalf of the country, the Head of State thanked the PNP for their work in the streets.
"Peru thanks you not just for October 15, not just for today, tomorrow, or the day after. Peru thanks you every day, from the traffic agents to those guarding the avenues and those carrying out interventions," he said.
President Jeri attended the ceremony accompanied by Prime Minister Ernesto Alvarez and PNP General Commander Oscar Arriola.
