After 26 years, Shining Path terrorist group head Abimael Guzman among other leaders have been sentenced to life in prison over the Tarata Street bombing that claimed the lives of 25 people in Peru, the Judicial Power ruled on Tuesday.
The attack took place in Lima's residential Miraflores district back in 1992.
The Public Ministry requested life sentence for the terrorists as they had been considered the perpetrators-by-means.
The probe included Abimael Guzman
, Elena Yparraguire, Maria Pantoja, Oscar Ramirez Durand, Osman Morote Barrionuevo
, Margot Liendo Gil
, Florindo Flores Hala, Laura Zambrano Padilla, Edmundo Cox Beuzeville, Florentino Cerron Cardoso, Moises Limaco Huayascachi, and Elizabeth Cardenas Huayta.
This will be the second life sentence given to Guzman
, Yparraguirre, Pantoja, and Flores Hala, whereas Morote Barrionuevo and Liendo Gil will return to jail as they were under house arrest since April.
It must be noted Limaco Huayascachi remains a fugitive from justice. Cardenas Huayta was acquitted of the charges.
The guilty ones will have to pay S/6 million (US$1.8 million) in reparations to the Peruvian State and the bombing victims.
The audience took place at Callao's Naval Base.
