A $20 million project to restore the historic Teatro Municipal of Lima has been completed, local authorities announced Tuesday.

Lima's Mayor Luis Castañeda said the 95-year-old municipal theater will reopen October 7 after being closed for twelve years.

Lima's stunning Teatro Municipal -once the pride of the local performing-arts scene and the primary locale for theater, ballet, opera, and symphony performances- was severely damaged by fire in 1998.

Restoration work, which began in mid-2008, included the installation of smoke detectors and non-flammable seats. The building has been designed to resist earthquakes measuring up to nine on the Richter Scale.

According to Castañeda, the acoustic system has been improved by building a concave dome and installing ergonomic and acoustic seats. However, the mayor ruled out the possibility of opening the Teatro Municipal with a big musical show, "since it is necessary to carry out sound checks first."

“It’s like when you have a new car; first, you have to check the speed and breaks before racing the car.”
