Peru President: Anti-corruption fight means 'no matter who falls'

14:18 | Paracas (Ica region), Nov. 28.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Thursday affirmed that the fight against corruption is a fundamental axis of his administration and means "no matter who falls," even if that person is a former high-ranking government official.

In his speech at the Annual Conference of Executives (CADE-Executives 2019), the Head of State said the changes demand words and actions consistent with each other. Thus, his administration launched the justice system reform in order to improve the sector's quality.

He noted these reforms must continue and said he hopes that —as soon as the new Congress is installed— the agenda will be resumed, which will enable Parliament to work willingly and transparently for the benefit of the entire population.

"We must listen to the demands of those who feel that the institutions do not represent them properly, those who are tired of corruption and see how the political and economic elites talk to each other, regardless of what happens to the ordinary citizens," the top official stated.

The President also said the social market economy has led to important advances over recent decades in Peru, such as poverty reduction; provision of education and health services; infrastructure gap reduction; and respect for human rights, among others.

Upon arrival, the top official was welcomed by CADE 2019 Chairman Luis Estrada and Peruvian Institute of Business Administration (IPAE) Chairwoman Elena Conterno.

The statesman entered the auditorium at the time the fight against corruption was being discussed by the business sector. He listened to the speakers and then addressed the attendees.
