Peru PM: Govt supports prosecutors, judges investigating corruption

17:01 | Lima, Nov. 11.

Prime Minister Vicente Zeballos on Monday said the Executive Branch supports the work done by prosecutors and judges committed to fighting corruption in Peru.

"We reaffirm our support for the neat, committed, responsible work of prosecutors and judges who have bravely emphasized an audit work, of auditing those who had a serious contradiction in any corruption act. As the Government, we must support (them)," Zeballos told reporters.

Likewise, the high-ranking official said he hopes those magistrates will have the institutional support because they cannot walk alone in the delicate and complex work being carried out.

Last Sunday, Lava Jato Special Prosecution Group Coordinator Rafael Vela warned that there would be an intention —among some Supreme Prosecutors— to remove him and Prosecutor Jose Domingo Perez from their cases, so that they do not continue with the investigations into the bribes paid by Brazilian Odebrecht company to former Peruvian Government officials in exchange for public works.

The Lava Jato Special Prosecution Group is supported by Attorney General Zoraida Avalos and President Martin Vizcarra.

According to Prosecutor Vela, Supreme Prosecutors Pedro Chavarry (ex-Attorney General), Tomas Galvez, and Victor Rodriguez Monteza could cast votes against him and his team.
