The 60th International Spring Festival in northern Peru’s Trujillo city expects to attract some 26,000 Peruvian and foreign tourists, regional trade and tourism director Bernardo Perez said Sunday.

According to Perez, most visitors will arrive the last weekend in September, when the grand parade weaves its way through all the major streets of Trujillo, capital of La Libertad region.

Local authorities estimate that about 90 percent of tourists will come from surrounding cities like Chiclayo in Lambayeque region, Chimbote (Ancash), and Valle Chicama and Viru (La Libertad).

"Many Trujillo-born expats visit their native city these days," said the tourism official, who projected a 4 percent increase in tourist arrivals compared with last year.

The spring festival was created in 1950 by the Lions Club of Trujillo, who have continued to organized the event. It features a hundred civic, artistic, cultural, folkloric and social events carried out along ten days of intense joy.

This year's program of activities offers a wide range of alternatives for the visitors, like paso horse exhibitions, marinera dance festivals, fashion shows, artistic spectacles, concerts, baston-twirlers, beauty contests and many parties.

One of the main features of the Festival is the spectacular Spring Parade with music bands, comparsas and allegoric carts competing in originality and colorfulness.
