Peru: Judiciary declares request for Eliane Karp extradition over Ecoteva case admissible

The Peruvian Judiciary's Supreme Court has declared admissible the request to Israel for the extradition of former First Lady Eliane Karp, who is prosecuted over money laundering charges in the Ecoteva case.

Eliane Karp has been in Israel since May 2023, following the United States' decision to extradite her husband, Alejandro Toledo to Peru. He is also prosecuted for allegedly having received bribes from Brazilian Odebrecht company in exchange for favoring it in the awarding of several stretches of the Interoceanic Highway.

The extradition request was sent by the Ninth Liquidating Criminal Chamber of the Superior Court in Lima to the Supreme Court for approval of Karp's extradition, at the request of the Prosecutor's Office investigating this case.

The Chamber indicated that Karp had ties to the Ecoteva foundation, which allegedly received funds from Brazilian Odebrecht company that were used to buy an office in the Lima-based Omega Tower and to pay off the mortgage on the Toledo-Karp home.

The Court stated that the proceeding against Karp has been suspended, adding that she has been declared a contumacious defendant.

It was stated that although there is no extradition treaty with Israel, the principle of reciprocity must be considered, since both Peru and Israel are signatories to the United Nations Convention against Corruption.

This convention commits the parties to prevent, as well as punish crimes of corruption and money laundering.
