Peru's PM: Former First Lady Eliane Karp is in Israel

Peruvian Prime Minister Alberto Otarola on Wednesday afternoon confirmed that former First Lady Eliane Karp is currently in Israel.

According to the Cabinet chief, the United States Department of Justice informed Peru's Embassy that Karp had taken a flight to Israel carrying an Israeli passport.

Afterwards —he indicated— the Peruvian Government carried out the inquiries and coordination over the case so as to verify the information, which has been confirmed.

The Cabinet chief indicated that the former First Lady had "certainly landed" in Israel.

He added that the case will be followed up on by Peru's Foreign Affairs Ministry "without failing to report that citizen Eliane Karp is required by Peruvian justice to be prosecuted for the alleged commission of money laundering."

In this sense, the high-ranking official emphasized that it is up to the Peruvian Government to support all authorities and autonomous constitutional bodies for the fulfillment of their institutional purposes.

Magistrate Judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, Thomas S. Hixson, had authorized the return of the former presidential couple's passports to them.

Karp was returned her documents after Toledo had turned himself in to U.S. authorities for his extradition to face criminal charges in Peru.

Former President Toledo's wife is not included in the criminal accusation over to the South Interocanic Highway, for which the U.S. had agreed to extradite him.

Eliane Karp is under investigation for alleged money laundering crimes, as a result of the million-dollar purchases she had made along with her mother, Eva Fernenbug, and her husband through the company known as Ecoteva.

Alejandro Toledo —who was extradited from the U.S. last April— is being investigated by the Peruvian justice for having allegedly received a bribe worth US$35 million from Brazilian construction companies to favor them in the bidding for the South Interoceanic Highway, while he was President of the Republic (2001-2006).

Since April 23, he has been serving pre-trial detention at Barbadillo Prison in Lima's eastern Ate district.
