The Embassy of Peru in Washington is constantly holding talks with the United States government in a bid to increase its support to the Andean country's fight against drug trafficking with a multilateral approach, Peruvian Ambassador to the U.S. Luis Valdivieso said Saturday.
"We believe it would be important that the U.S. considers increasing its support to Peru, we have requested that, and we are constantly meeting to see how we can achieve this," he told Andina.
The diplomat noted that Peru is seeking to establish closer cooperation with the Colombian government, following the success of "Plan Colombia" which received significant economic support from the United States to combat drugs.
Ambassador Valdivieso also pointed out that the success of anti-drug plans of other countries in the region, including Mexico's Plan Merida, has an effect on neighboring countries, and this is being discussed during the meetings with the U.S. officials.
"This position was warmly welcomed by the U.S., because the success of Colombia have caused drug traffickers to move to Peru, that's what we call the balloon effect," he said.
In that regard, he stressed the need to tackle drug trafficking issues on a multilateral basis instead of a bilateral one, "that is the subject of talks held in Washington," he added.
