Peruvian Ambassador presents credentials to FAO

12:43 | Rome (Italy), May. 28.

Peruvian Ambassador to Italy Julio Eduardo Martinetti presented credential letters to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations' (FAO) Director-General Jose Graziano da Silva.

During the ceremony, the FAO Director-General welcomed the envoy and acknowledged the Inca nation has an active and permanent participation in the organization.

Likewise, they agreed there are existing opportunities to strengthen ties between Peru and FAO, as well as to renew the commitment to working together in order to eliminate hunger and malnutritionreduce rural poverty, develop sustainable food and agricultural systems, as well as mitigate and adapt to climate change

On his part, Ambassador Martinetti underlined Peru has achieved important accomplishments in extreme poverty reduction. However, he said, it must overcome great challenges to reach the development of all its citizens, despite being considered an upper-middle income nation.

For that reason, FAO's technical cooperation on food and agricultural domains is key to accomplish the goals set towards the country's Independence Bicentennial in 2021 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

In this sense, the Peruvian diplomat noted the sign of clear interest from President Martin Vizcarra's administration in making progress on the aforementioned objectives.

He also highlighted the appointment of agricultural engineer and former Agriculture Minister Gustavo Mostajo as Agricultural Attaché to the Permanent Representation. The news was well received by FAO.

The ceremony took place in Rome on May 24.
