Monetary poverty in Peru was reduced from 21.7% in 2017 to 20.5% in 2018, meaning 313,000 citizens abandoned said situation last year, the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) reported Wednesday.

According to INEI Chief Jose Garcia, monetary poverty declined 1.2 percentage point between 2017 and 2018

Likewise, the official informed 20.5% of the Inca country's population (6.593 million people) lived in poverty, in other words, they belonged to households whose per capita expenditure was below the poverty line.

Furthermore, he explained monetary poverty declined 3.4% between 2013-2018 and 16.8% between 2008-2018.

INEI also indicated rural poverty stood at 42.1% last year, thus sliding 2.3 percentage points.

On the other hand, extreme poverty decreased from 3.8% (2017) to 2.8% (2018). In this sense, 309,000 Peruvians left this situation behind.
