Peru President inaugurates Climate Change Research Laboratory

13:50 | Lima, Dec. 26.

President Martin Vizcarra on Wednesday inaugurated the Climate Change Research Laboratory, which will provide valuable information to prevent global warming impacts on farming activities.

This facility will enable climate-smart agriculture. Thanks to its technical information, medium- and long-term options will be planned.

"Climate change is a reality in Peru's most remote areas, as well as the world's. We are experiencing it, as it is affecting the development of human activities," the top official expressed.

Likewise, he indicated the farming sector is vulnerable to climate change, adding temperature variations can cause stronger and more frequent events, such as Coastal El Niño phenomenon, rains or droughts.

"If the agriculture (sector) is not conscious about climate change, and it does not prepare to adequately face it, then we will have problems," he warned.

"Well-informed farmers can continue producing and maintaining productivity (...)," President Vizcarra added.

Furthermore, the Head of State reaffirmed his administration's support for the farming sector, adding millions of Peruvians rely on this activity, since they feed themselves with the products harvested in diverse areas of the Inca country.

"We promote agro-exports, but let's not forget the small-scale farmers from High-Andean areas who had been left behind (…)," he underscored.

On the occasion, the top official was joined by Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Gustavo Mostajo.

President Vizcarra congratulated Mostajo's portfolio and the National Institute of Agricultural Innovation (INIA) for having implemented this initiative.
