Peru's President: My purpose was to restore people's trust, hope

The President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti on Tuesday evening affirmed that working to restore people's trust and hope has been the main purpose of his outgoing administration.

"If we have done something from the Transition and Emergency Government, it is to fulfill what we had promised. We had never promised what we cannot deliver, but we do deliver what we promised," Mr. Sagasti said in his last address to the nation as Peru's top leader.

"This is the way to restore people's hope and trust (…) I hope that we had made at least a little progress in this direction," he pointed out.

Within this framework, the Head of State stressed that his administration had managed to increase fivefold the number of medical oxygen plants nationwide, adding that it has secured enough COVID-19 vaccines to immunize the entire population by the end of 2021.

"In addition, we have organized a vaccination process that is progressing rapidly and administering all vaccines as they arrive," he added.

However, the top official noted that the population must continue to respect biosafety protocols, such as properly wearing face masks and complying with social distancing —even after inoculation— in order to

reduce the impacts of a possible third wave.

Likewise, the statesman pointed out that the nation still has a long way to go during this Bicentennial.

Thus, he requested young people to continue undertaking efforts for the sake of society.

"I would like to summon young people, young people of all ages, to commit and actively participate in improving the living conditions of all Peruvian citizens. That implies, among other things, getting involved in political life," he stressed.

The Peruvian leader also reflected how his administration had developed in recent months. In this sense,

Mr. Sagasti stated that a leader must make decisions based on principles and honesty.

"One has to be aware that, by saying yes to something, at the same time that person is saying no to others. We do not have all the resources, time is not infinite, and finances are not infinite. Therefore, we have to choose; let us choose with courage, principles, values, honesty, and aspiring to summon all those who have a vocation for service," he concluded.

As is known, President Sagasti —who took office on November 17, 2020, to lead the Transition and Emergency Government— will leave office on July 28, 2021.

He will be succeeded by President-elect Pedro Castillo, who defeated Keiko Fujimori in the June presidential runoff election.
