The
National Election Board (JNE) on Monday evening proclaimed Pedro Castillo Terrones as President-elect of the Republic of Peru for the 2021-2026 period.
The JNE has also proclaimed Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra as first Vice President-elect of Peru.
Mr.
Castillo was a presidential candidate for Peru Libre and winner of the runoff election —held on June 6, 2021— according to a resolution issued by the country's supreme electoral body.
He was born on October 19, 1969, in the district of Tacabamba in Cajamarca region, where he currently resides.
He is the third of nine siblings, and his parents are Ireño Castillo Nuñez and Mavila Terrones Guevara.
The President-elect studied at Octavio Matta Contreras de Cutervo Pedagogical Institute, and graduated in education from Cesar Vallejo University.
He also holds a master's degree in educational psychology from said institution.
Political career
Before running for president —for Peru Libre— Castillo was a candidate for Mayor of the Municipality of Anguia —for Peru Posible— in 2002.
He was also a committee member of said political party in Cajamarca region between 2005 and 2017.
Additionally, he has served as a teachers' union leader and led —together with other representatives— a strike in 2007.
