Symphony for Peru (Sinfonía por el Perú) —the organization chaired by worlwide famous tenor Juan Diego Flórez— participated in the First World Congress on the Social Impact of Music: “The Promise of Music”, held recently at the Royal Conservatory of Toronto in Canada.
The international musical event organized by the prestigious Glenn Gould Foundation, brought together delegations from Asia, Africa, Latin America, Central America, and the United States to highlight the progress of institutions that use music as a powerful tool for social transformation.
Over five days, "The Promise of Music" featured concerts, public forums, and academic activities focused on topics such as music & health and music & neuroscience, as well as case studies and best practices in cultural management.
Representing Peru on stage, the Symphony for Peru Youth Choir — composed of 29 young singers under the direction of maestro Juan Carlos Bersague — performed in several venues. Their main presentation was a joint concert with the Toronto Vocal Ensemble, featuring a repertoire that included Peruvian and Latin American pieces along with international works.
The Peruvian delegation also surprised attendees with a spontaneous flashmob-style performance, sharing a powerful simultaneous performance moment with Venezuela’s ensemble Lara Somos. The audience also enjoyed performances by groups such as Kenya’s Mully Children’s Family Choir, Paraguay’s Cateura Recycled Orchestra, and Dubai’s Firdaus Orchestra, all celebrated examples of music’s transformative impact worldwide.
On the academic side, young members of Symphony for Peru joined the panel Lessons Learned: The Sweet Sound of Success in Music Programs, where Diego Becerra, the organization’s Music Programs Manager, presented key learnings from its social intervention model, internationally recognized for strengthening cooperation, commitment, and community cohesion.
Join the campaign “A Symphony that Transforms”
The international presence of Symphony for Peru’s main ensembles is made possible thanks to the support of thousands of people who believe in the power of music to promote well-being and create opportunities for children, teenagers, and young adults in vulnerable situations.
Through the A Symphony that Transforms (Sinfonía que transforma) donation campaign, the organization seeks to raise funds to sustain its music education centers, enabling more than 7,000 young people to develop talent, confidence, and essential life skills.
