Peru's President: We will leave 50 million COVID-19 vaccines for next government

The President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti on Friday announced that his administration will leave 50 million vaccines against COVID-19 for the next government —which will take office on July 28, 2021— to continue immunizing citizens.

Within this framework,

the Head of State asserted that the vaccination strategy aims to benefit the entire nation in an equitable manner.

"We will leave the incoming government, on July 28, with 45 to 50 million vaccine doses and maybe a little more, if the negotiations proceed well as we hope will be the case," he expressed.

Likewise, the top official stressed that an administration can govern honestly, developing projects without causing any noise.

Furthermore, the statesman affirmed that the Transition and Emergency Government —which he leads— will not stop working until its last day in office.

In this sense, the Peruvian leader mentioned that a slight decrease in the number of infected and deceased citizens is being observed at the national level.

Moreover, Mr. Sagasti remarked that his administration has already secured 60 million vaccines, which will serve to immunize the country's entire population of legal age.

"Vaccination is being scheduled in accordance with the arrival of the different types of vaccines. Pfizer doses are being administered in regions relying on cold chains. (…) We also count on other vaccines which are arriving in the country and are being allocated to regions that do not have the capacity to store (vaccines) in extreme cold," he indicated.

The President explained that the vaccination of frontline personnel in the fight against COVID-19 is already being completed, as he reiterated his commitment to immunize the entire vulnerable population before July 28, 2021.

"In every region, older adults are being vaccinated first. At the same time, there are people who have some genetic, congenital or degenerative diseases that make them extremely vulnerable, regardless of their age. For this reason, we are vaccinating them at the same time as the elderly," he explained.

On the other hand, Mr. Sagasti stressed that Trabaja Peru (Work, Peru) Program has already started in Amazonas region —a measure designed to restore historical monuments and generate inclusive social employment.
