The Ministry of Production (Produce) reported today that the fishing sector's GDP experienced moderate growth of 6.4% in September 2025 compared to the same month in 2024.

Minister of Production César Quispe Luján stated that, in this way, the fishing sector contributed S/ 242 million (approximately US$ 72 million) from both the extractive and processing phases, representing 0.5% of the national GDP.

“In September, fish landings destined for Direct Human Consumption (DHC) reached 141,400 metric tons, experiencing a significant increase of 72.2%, which has allowed the sector's GDP to end the month in positive territory,” Quispe highlighted.

He added that this increase was mainly due to the greater extraction of resources destined for the canning industry, which grew by 34.8%, frozen fish (152.8%), and fresh fish (11.8%).

“The species that contributed to this increase in DHC landings were: jumbo squid (5,620.7%), bonito (36.7%), and shrimp (37.5%), which are precisely the species that end up on Peruvian tables,” he asserted.

It should be noted that no fishing for Indirect Human Consumption (IHC) was recorded in September 2025, because there was no fishing activity in the southern zone. And in the north-central zone, the anchovy reproductive ban was in effect.

January – September 2025

From January to September 2025, the total volume of fish landings exceeded 4.3 million metric tons, representing a 20.1% increase compared to the same period of the previous year.

This growth is mainly attributed to a 21.5% increase in landings of resources destined for Direct Human Consumption (DHC), due to the greater extraction of resources destined for the frozen food industry, which increased by 55.3%, primarily squid, shrimp, tuna, and silverside.

Likewise, an increase of 19.6% was observed in anchovy landings destined for Indirect Human Consumption (IHC).
