Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Ana Cecilia Gervasi on Monday affirmed that recent statements by Colombian President Gustavo Petro, regarding Peru and its law enforcement agencies, are unacceptable and inappropriate.

The Peruvian government official noted that the rejection of this kind of statements has been repeatedly expressed through the corresponding diplomatic channels.

"The statements that have been made outside the country in recent days, about the Peruvian National Police, are unacceptable. They are inappropriate. Seven of its members have lost their lives in a criminal attack in the VRAEM," Gervasi said in an interview with Caretas.

The Foreign Affairs sector's head stated that she will not get involved in an exchange of statements or fuel headlines.

"The historic friendly relations between Peru and the countries of the region, which include integration processes to benefit the social development of all our peoples, are above this," she remarked.

In recent statements, Gustavo Petro referred to the extensive deployment of the Peruvian National Police in Lima's historic center.
