Peru's 2026 Elections: JNE announces presidential debate for Sunday, May 31

16:00 | Lima, May. 18.

The presidential debate between the two candidates who advanced to the runoff, Keiko Fujimori (Popular Force Party) and Roberto Sanchez (Together for Peru Party) will take place on May 31, while the debate between the technical teams of those parties will be held a week earlier, on May 24, National Elections Board (JNE) Chairman Roberto Burneo announced Monday.

The official said the presidential candidates' debate will be held at the Lima Convention Center.

The debate between the technical teams will take place at the National Elections Board (JNE) headquarters in Lima's Jesus Maria district.

"Today, they met for an initial round of negotiations, and I want to highlight something important: both political organizations showed willingness to engage in dialogue and reach agreements," Burneo said.

"In this case, there will be two debates, on May 24 and May 31, a technical debate and a presidential debate, respectively," he added.

In remarks to JNE TV, Burneo said negotiations between both political groups are continuing to determine other details regarding the methodology and moderators. Thus, constant coordination will continue and the results will be communicated in due course.

"It is important to recognize the commitment and responsibility shown by these two political organizations, both of which signed the Ethical Pact. This is important to highlight, and it is a process that leads us to the next stages," he said.

Likewise, the electoral authority said the presidential debates held during the previous stage "generated a strong impact among the population," which had even shown "apathy regarding the candidates' positions."

"And it was an opportunity to get to know the candidates and the proposals they had, which allowed the population to pay attention to the contenders," Burneo said.

"Therefore, it is a great opportunity for citizens to take a deeper look at the two options that advanced to the runoff and, through an informed and responsible vote, make a decision," he added.

At another point, the JNE head recalled that during the first round, various requests were addressed through the so-called 900,000 polling tables, which are overseen by the JNE and were created to bring voting closer to the population.

The official noted that the participation of party representatives will be important in the runoff, thus encouraging political organizations to accredit them in advance.

"They (the party representatives) are their allies in the face of controversies, and they are the ones who can challenge the ballots," Burneo added.

Lastly, he called on the citizenry to turn out in large numbers on June 7 to exercise the right to vote.
