The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) deployed a total of 50 long-term observers Monday morning to all regions nationwide, where they will remain until the conclusion of the presidential runoff scheduled for Sunday, June 7.

According to Deputy Chief Observer Alexander Gray, the observers are officials from EU member states, as well as from countries such as Canada and Norway.

In remarks to reporters, Gray reiterated that the EU had been invited to observe the elections by the Peruvian Government and electoral authorities.

The EU official added that it was not in Peru "to interfere in the process, but to observe and recommend improvements."

Likewise, Gray expressed hope that citizens, who already demonstrated their strong commitment to democracy and civic values on April 12, "will be able to choose freely and without interference between the two candidates who advanced to the runoff."

In addition, he indicated that ahead of election day, the EU EOM will be joined by 50 additional short-term observers, as well as a delegation of European Parliament members and observers from the embassies of EU member states and partner countries in Peru.

"In total, the EU Election Observation Mission will deploy more than 150 observers throughout the country," he noted.

The EU EOM carries out its work in accordance with the Declaration of Principles for International Election Observation.

Similarly, the delegation is governed by a code of conduct that applies the principles of independence, impartiality, and non-interference.

As part of its work, the EU EOM observes all aspects of the electoral process, from voter and candidate registration to the resolution of potential challenges and the publication of final results.

It also analyzes the role of the media and social media during the campaign.

As previously reported, the mission's preliminary findings will be presented at a press conference on June 9 in Lima.

The final report—which will include recommendations to improve future electoral processes—will be submitted to authorities and the Peruvian public once the entire electoral process has concluded.
