The President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti on Monday expressed his appreciation to Peruvian women for shaping a way forward supported by courage and determination, as well as undertaking a constant struggle towards equal opportunities.

During the ceremony "Women, pillars of my neighborhood for a safe Peru," the Head of State also recognized the female citizens who work actively in the security of neighborhoods nationwide and undertake outstanding efforts in favor of prevention against COVID-19.

"On this day, we recognize Peruvian women in all their dimensions: migrants, workers, and professionals who managed to make their way with courage and determination, and who are often relegated but still struggle for equal opportunities," he remarked.

The top official noted that —in addition to International Women's Day— Women's Day in the year of the Peruvian Bicentennial is celebrated "and we must remember the importance of female citizens' struggle for equal opportunities, their drive, and their determination in adverse circumstances" such as those being currently experienced due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Likewise, the statesman highlighted the importance of strengthening support for women, especially those who are victims of physical violence.

In this sense, Mr. Sagasti called on the nation's authorities to join this fight in defense of gender equality and for the eradication of all types of violence against female citizens.

The "Women, pillars of my neighborhood for a safe Peru" —a ceremony hosted by the Interior Ministry sought to highlight local leaders from the local citizen security boards, as well as community female police.

The ceremony was held at the Interior Ministry's esplanade and was attended by Minister Jose Elice.
