In recognition of the efforts undertaken by women in farming activities, the
on Tuesday announced the creation of the Directorate for Rural Women to articulate measures that strengthen their productive development.
The
sector's head Federico Tenorio explained that —as part of the institution's reorganization process— a Directorate for the Promotion of Rural Women will be established, taking into account that 30% of farming activities in the South American country are led by female citizens.
"The objective of this measure is to promote training and technical advice aimed at rural women. We are also going to streamline financing and insurance for Family Farming producers, who are the majority of farming workers," he said during his presentation on the Challenges for the Development of Agrarian Policy in Peru —a virtual forum organized by the
Permanent Seminar on Agrarian Research (SEPIA).
Community leadership
Moreover, the minister highlighted the role of women's leadership within their communities and in agricultural activities at the national level, for having direct participation in the protection and care of our biodiversity —the main source of food.
"Rural women are in charge of their families'
food safety; but also of their communities. Their role is essential for the development of rural territories," he expressed.
Therefore, high-ranking official revealed that —as part of the policy to promote
Family Farming— a Directorate for Rural Women will be created, which will be allocated the necessary budget for the implementation of activities.
According to information from the
United Nations, women in the field represent about 43% of the agricultural workforce in developing countries. In certain countries in Asia and Africa, female citizens account for up to 60% of the labor force.
