The President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti on Thursday affirmed that
During a virtual conversation on the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the Head of State highlighted the role that
Peruvian women, adolescents, and girls have been playing in favor of scientific research, thus reaching new levels of achievement in a year marked by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The statesman stressed the love for science and the knowledge that they foster since they are children, for being willing to constantly question ideas and approaches, and not staying with the truth received but conducting research setting ambitious goals and objectives.
"You will continue fighting in the future, studying, and your example will make more
women pursue scientific careers," he said, referring to the fact that there is no better achievement in life than contributing to humanity with work and dignifying lives in harmony with knowledge.
"
Women have a lot to contribute to the development of capacities in science, technology, and innovation," he underlined.
Likewise, the top official mentioned that there is still a long way to go to achieve parity and equal opportunities.
The leader argued that —although
women are achieving visibility in different fields of national life— they need to overcome barriers, such as the distribution of domestic tasks.
In a study conducted years ago, it was shown that there was no parity on this issue, Mr. Sagasti recalled.
"Therefore, it is time for men to assume the responsibility that corresponds to us and for women to have time and space to exercise their careers," he indicated.
In addition, the President requested women scientists to publish more often their research results and work on joint projects with their peers abroad.
