The President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti on Monday highlighted the important role played by women throughout history and —at current times— with their increasingly active presence in the social, political, and business lives, as well as in leadership positions in the Peruvian State.

"The role of women, throughout history and at present times, is extremely important and will remain this way in the future. Unfortunately, only half a century ago and a little longer, we clearly and effectively recognized this role through the (right to) vote," he expressed.

Speaking to Piura's Radio Cutivalú, the Head of State said that citizens now can observe how women are developing a more active and positive role in different areas of the social and political lives.

Within this framework, the top official highlighted the presence of women in the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, the Congress' Chairmanship, the Attorney General's Office, the National Board of Justice, and the Constitutional Court.

"They are in different areas of national and business lives, but above all in the lives of communities that are well aware of the role of women leaders. This has been key and necessary in the field and in the city," he pointed out.

In that sense, the recognition paid to female citizens today on International Women's Day is highly deserved, he concluded.
