Peru is very close to materializing its first exports of beef and pork to China following the progress made in negotiations on phytosanitary protocols.

This was announced on Thursday by Agrarian Development and Irrigation Minister Angel Manero, who explained that Peru is additionally negotiating three other protocols for the entry of frozen fruits, pomegranates, and pecans.

"We have come to China to allow Peru to later export frozen fruits (mangos, avocados, and blueberries), in addition to pomegranates and pecans. We have also initiated the procedure to export beef and pork to the Chinese market," Manero told TVPeru.

The government official underscored that these four new protocols involve the supply from small producers, mainly of the Andean region. Thus, there could be exports from most Peruvian regions if an agreement with the Asian Giant is reached.

The Cabinet member explained that around 30,000 mango producers reside in northern Peru (from Ancash to Piura regions), and 10,000 small producers of frozen avocados are based in the Andean region.

"In the medium term, we see beef as an Andean product that can come from all regions of our highlands," Manero said.

"At the moment, we are negotiating with China for access of meats because, traditionally, we have only exported agricultural products, (meaning) vegetables and fruits. Now, gaining access for our meats would mean having not just an exporting coast but also an exporting Andean region," he added.

Asked about the possible entry into force of this measure, the Cabinet member estimated that it could occur at the end of this year.
