Peru PM: Executive, Legislative Branches have responsibility of building common agenda

13:09 | Moquegua (Moquegua region), Jan. 26.

Peruvian Prime Minister Vicente Zeballos on Sunday said there is the responsibility of building a common agenda with the Congress members, who will be elected by citizens today in the 2020 extraordinary parliamentary elections.

"The new Parliament and the Executive Branch have the responsibility of generating a common agenda thinking about the country. This is not about generating divisiveness or confrontation. On the contrary, from the Executive (Branch), we are going to promote any space for understanding between both State powers," he told Canal N.

Regardless of today's result, it is a political responsibility to generate spaces for consensus and understanding with the new Congress.

"The idea is to establish a common agenda. We respect the agenda that Parliament will propose, but there is a country agenda that involves all of us," he expressed.

Prime Minister Zeballos said he expects a greater commitment to the country, in favor of democratic sustainability and political-communication bridges, which will allow for a common agenda.

"It's not about contrasting, but about building (consensus)," he remarked.

The high-ranking official also mentioned that —once the new Parliament is installed— the Executive Branch will have to give an account of all the measures taken by the administration —starting with the enacted urgency decrees— following the constitutional dissolution of Congress September 30.

"We hope that, within the constructive and consensus-related environment, the proposal will be well received, and we will take the path of institutional responsibility and strengthening," he stated.

Thanks to the legitimacy of the sovereign vote, he said, a new direction is being given to democracy, and it obliges everyone to put forward their best arguments thinking about the country.
