Congress Board members on Friday held a meeting with Christian Salazar Volkmann, Special Envoy of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, to discuss the national situation in Peru.

Congress Chairman Jose Williams Zapata, as well as legislators Martha Moyano (First Deputy Chairwoman), Digna Calle (Second Deputy Chairwoman), and Alejandro Muñante (Third Deputy Chairman), participated in the meeting.

The visit by Salazar Volkmann, Special Envoy of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, comes in response to the invitation issued by the Peruvian State in the face of protests that have arisen in recent weeks.

Discussed issues

Upon leaving the meeting, Salazar Volkmann indicated that he had spoken with Congress representatives about the need for the Peruvian State to guarantee the right to protest, even in situations as complex as the ones that Peru is experiencing now, and to avoid stigmatizing protesters as terrorists.

"We have discussed that, at the same time, acts of violence and destruction of infrastructure, of any kind, must also be investigated and punished in accordance with due process. Those were the issues we addressed," the UN representative added in brief statements to the press.

Meeting with Prime Minister

Similarly, the envoy indicated that he is in the country, joined by a delegation, to help strengthen capacities in terms of respect for human rights in Peru.
