UN representative welcomes Peruvian Government's openness to address human rights issues

10:51 | Lima, Jan. 20.

Christian Salazar Volkmann, Envoy of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, on Friday welcomed the Peruvian Government's openness to talk about these issues —within the framework of his current visit to Peru.

In brief remarks to reporters, the envoy indicated that he is in the country, joined by a delegation, to help strengthen capacities in terms of respect for human rights in Peru.

Likewise, the UN representative affirmed that delegation members lament the deaths and injuries registered during the protests held over recent days.

In this sense, Salazar Volkmann pointed out that they have requested information on what the Government is doing to prevent these acts (deaths and injuries) from happening again and so that cases are properly investigated.

"We welcome the openness (of the Government) to be able to discuss human rights issues," he told reporters.

Remarks were made by the Envoy of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights upon leaving the headquarters of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM) in Lima, where he met with Prime Minister Alberto Otarola.

Asked about the content of said conversation, Salazar Volkmann indicated that the delegation will issue a statement containing more information at the end of the visit.
