Peruvian Association of Incoming and Domestic Tourism Operators (Apotur) Chairwoman Claudia Merino highlighted that the triumph of Pan con Chicharron (Pork Crackling Sandwich) in a global social media competition reaffirms Peru's supremacy in world gastronomy.
"Although it is not a restaurant that receives (the award), the vast number of followers in this worldwide breakfast contest makes clear that Peru is a consolidated global leader in gastronomy," she stated.
Peru's Pan con Chicharron received 12.8 million votes, surpassing Venezuela's Arepa, which garnered 12.6 million, in the cumulative count across various digital platforms worldwide, organized by Spanish influencer Ibai Llanos.
The Peruvian breakfast —including Pan con Chicharron, Tamal (Tamale), and coffee— emerged as the public's favorite in this open digital contest.

The Apotur chairwoman also underscored that Peru has already received several international gastronomic awards, starting with Central restaurant and later with Maido.
In that regard, Merino stressed that this recognition by the global public —through digital voting on different platforms— of Pan con Chicharron as the world's best breakfast will undoubtedly attract more tourists to Peru, drawn by the appeal of its diverse traditional foods and beverages.
She further noted that this recognition of the traditional Peruvian breakfast strengthens Lima's image as a tourist destination in its own right, rather than merely a stopover.
Moreover, Merino emphasized that decentralization is vital and urgent for Peru.
Thus, this new accolade adds to the country's appeal when promoting tourism, alongside its historical, cultural, geographical, religious, and gastronomic legacy.
