Brazil successfully defended their title by defeating Team USA 25-17, 25-16, 25-27, 25-19 in the final of the II Final Four Women’s Volleyball Cup played at Eduardo Dibos Coliseum on Sunday.
Dominican Republic scored a 25-17, 25-21, 27-25 victory over Peru to claim the bronze medal, UniversalSports reported.
Regiane Bidias led four Brazilians in double figures with 22 points, Adenizia Silva had 14 and Welissa Gonzaga and Caroline Gattaz contributed 14 and 10 points respectively.
“I am very happy about winning the tournament again. The team responded well to our plan in every game and I am satisfied with the girls,” said Brazilian coach Paulo Barros.
Hugh McCutcheon said he was also satisfied with the performance of his team. “We could work on some areas and do evaluations for our next event, the NORCECA continental. I am OK with the job done by the girls,” he said.
Prisilla Rivera led the Dominican Republic with 14 points and Lisvel Eve contributed 12, including six blocks. Altagracia Mambru chipped in nine points. Peruvians Carla Rueda and Jessenia Uceda charted 9 points apiece.
“We are satisfied with a podium position, even though our goal was to be in the final match, but we were not lucky enough,” said Milagros Cabral, the captain of Dominican Republic. “We were able to use many young players today to test them. Five starting players are out with injuries so we are working hard with our youngsters.”
“This tournament made it clear the areas where we need to work for the World Championship,” said Leyla Chihuan, the captain of Peru. “Now it is up to us to prepare well and work harder.”
