Peru's President: Elections board is only institution entitled to define electoral results

| Ayacucho (Ayacucho region), Jul. 6.
The
President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti
on Tuesday affirmed that the
National Election Board (JNE) is the only entity with the power to define electoral results in Peru.
Within this framework, the Head of State said that
electoral authorities are autonomous
. Besides, the
Government does not interfere or give its point of view on an electoral process
, which has been
carried out in accordance with the rules and the supervision by international organizations.
Under this premise —he emphasized—
it is not up to the Executive Branch to issue any opinion on the decision to be eventually made by the JNE or when it will be done.
The top official specified that "a president is not an arbitrator, and the
National Election Board is the only one which has the power to define (the results)
."
"Therefore, any attempt by the Executive Branch to serve as an arbitrator would be outside the Constitution, and it is not up to us," he stated.
Know how to lose, know how to win
Concerning the remarks about knowing how to win and lose —which he gave
the day before during the farewell of the delegation that will participate in the Tokyo Olympic Games
— the statesman indicated that these are teachings given by athletes.
The teachings —such as those provided by the national soccer team at the 2021 Copa America tournament—
are examples to be put into practice in different aspects of life —both in sport competitions and of any other nature.
"That was the only meaning my words had," he pointed out.
Remarks were made during a conference in
Ayacucho, where Mr. Sagasti arrived to deliver a new batch of COVID-19 vaccines, supervise the vaccination of rural teachers, and carry out other activities.
As is known,
President Francisco Sagasti's Transition and Emergency Government is set to leave office on July 28, 2021.
It must be noted that
the presidential runoff election winner is yet to be announced by the National Election Board (JNE).
