Peru President: "We cannot commercialize politics"

18:04 | Paracas (Ica region), Nov. 28.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Thursday affirmed that politics cannot be commercialized if a "true market economy is sought by all Peruvians, who are in search of changes."

"During the past week, we have witnessed a series of events that have clearly shown the type of link that has existed for decades between politics and businesses. Let's not cover the sun with a finger and understand —once and for all— that the right thing has not been done. We cannot commercialize politics if we want to develop a true market economy for all," the top official emphasized.

"And this requires an urgent self-criticism by all the actors involved. We cannot whip up the fear of ghosts from the past to justify that nothing changes and that the privileges remain intact," he stated.

According to the President, the challenge Peru faces as a State and society "is of great importance, and we cannot afford inaction."

"The years of macroeconomic growth will have been of little use to us if bad practices and bad vices remain entrenched in the country and are used to obtain favors, condition the support, or break the wills," he concluded.
