Peru President: Referendum to consolidate democracy

12:55 | Santiago (Chile), Nov. 27.

President Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday affirmed he is confident the December 9 referendum will consolidate democracy in the Inca country.

"Peru is carrying out these reforms within the channels of democracy. The essential part is the population will be the one to ultimately decide if they agree or not with the reforms. That will grant more legitimacy to the results," the Head of State told Chile's El Mercurio newspaper.

In this sense, the top official indicated the Inca nation is gambling much more in this popular vote since these initiatives had been pending for years.

The statesman went on to add the referendum seeks to offer a solution to the diverse corruption cases registered in recent years, as well as to recover the prestige of institutions.

Likewise, the highest-ranking official assured he is aware the reforms will not solve Peru's structural problems.

However, they will mark an inflection point, as well as open an opportunity for development and hope for the population.

Peru's statesman indicated significant commitments have been accomplished concerning border development, social matters, security, trade, environment, and culture.
