Peru President: Reforms will lead to firm fight against corruption

13:47 | Lima, Oct. 8.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Monday said the entire reform package —to be put to a referendum set for Dec. 9— will contribute to fighting corruption and restoring citizens' confidence in institutions.

"Peru is reaffirming its democratic values, and deciding its future with enthusiasm and conviction. Therefore, Peruvians will attend the referendum on December 9 to express their opinion on the important reforms the country needs," he stated.

Speaking at the ceremony marking the 197th anniversary of the Peruvian Navy, Vizcarra affirmed urgent changes at the Judiciary will help fight corruption —including its bad practices and habits— with determination.

Meanwhile, the adjustments will help shape an effective, timely, transparent, efficient, and corruption-free judicial system.

As for the political reform, the Peruvian leader claimed it will improve representation levels, strengthen the democratic system, and restore the population's confidence in institutions, thus contributing to good governance.

"We are aware of the reforms required by Peru and we are taking firm steps to build the country Peruvians deserve: a developed and fair place without corruption," the statesman added.

According to Vizcarra, it's not an easy road with obstacles coming up every day, but he is convinced reforms can be implemented if citizens get authorities' attention.

The proposed reforms address lawmakers' re-election, a bicameral legislature, political parties' private financing, and a reform of the National Council of the Magistracy (CNM) —recently renamed National Justice Board.
