Peru President: People to freely express themselves at referendum

18:02 | Lima, Oct. 9.

President Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday affirmed Peruvian citizens will freely express their opinions in the upcoming referendum.

Earlier today, the Head of State had called a public consultation for December 9 to pass the four constitutional reforms proposed by the Executive Branch so as to improve the Inca country's judicial-political system.

"We need more solid and trustworthy institutions. That's why we want the population to speak out through the referendum," he said.

Peru's top official reaffirmed he agrees with three of the four approved projects, the ones on lawmakers' re-election, political parties' private financing, and the creation of the National Justice Board —formerly National Council of the Magistracy (CNM).

Concerning the initiative envisaging the return of a bicameral legislature, President Vizcarra warned the changes made to the bill denaturalize it.

"We democratically express our disagreement with the bicameral legislature (reform) the way it was approved (by Congress)," he expressed.

Remarks were made during a groundbreaking ceremony for Oyon-Ambo road project.
