Peru President: Government willing to dialogue with all political parties

11:59 | Lima, Feb. 2.

The President of the Republic, Martin Vizcarra, on Sunday affirmed that the recent extraordinary parliamentary elections —held on January 26— marked the beginning of a new stage in the country, since their results show the commitment of Peruvian citizens to dialogue.

In this sense, the Head of State indicated that —between Monday and Wednesday— the Executive Branch will meet with eight of the nine parties that passed the 5% threshold and —consequently— will have representation in the new Parliament.

Likewise, the top official said Peru has the challenge of reaching the Bicentennial (2021) with a strengthened, more representative, and legitimate democracy.

"That is the greatest legacy this Congress can leave to Peru, despite its short period of functioning," he remarked.

The statesman also noted that his administration has a broad agenda of priorities which include: boosting economic growth, job creation, education, health, and public security.

In this regard, Mr. Vizcarra said he is confident that the Executive Branch's proposals will match those of the new Congress' political forces.

Remarks were made during the ceremony to commemorate 100th anniversary of creation of Lima's district of La Victoria.

The new 130 legislators will serve the remaining period of the 2016-2021 legislative tenure, following the dissolution of Congress.
