Peru President announces work meetings with new Congress parties

14:56 | Tumbes (Tumbes region), Jan. 28.

The President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday announced that —starting next week— he will hold meetings with the recently-elected parties to be present in the new Congress, with the purpose of matching an agenda with Parliament.

In this sense, the Head of State affirmed that it will be a "frank, sincere, and mutual respect" relationship aimed at finding consensus for the benefit of Peru.

"We will work with everyone, and we are going, as we have said, to define a common agenda starting next week. We will establish a relationship with the new political forces and hold work meetings to start matching the agendas," he expressed.

The top official indicated that important issues —which must be resolved at Parliament— are the completion of the political and justice reform, as well as the consolidation of economic growth with proper distribution "in order to reduce social inequality."

According to the latest official results provided by the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), Accion Popular, FREPAP, Podemos Peru, Partido Morado, Union Por el Peru, Fuerza Popular, Frente Amplio, Alianza Para el Progreso, and Somos Peru may have cleared the 5% threshold needed to secure parliamentary representation.

The new 130 legislators will serve the remaining period of the 2016-2021 legislative tenure, following the dissolution of Congress.
