Peru President: We are committed to universal health care

19:02 | Cusco (Cusco region), Jan. 9.

President Martin Vizcarra on Thursday affirmed that the Government is committed to all Peruvian citizens receiving health care, as he confirmed that 2020 will be the Year of Health Care Universalization.

"From Machu Picchu, today we announce that the name of this 2020 is the Year of Health Care Universalization. We are committed to all Peruvians receiving this essential service," he posted on Twitter.

The Head of State said health care must reach out to all Peruvians, and that will be achieved by working with regional and local governments.

During his work visit, the top official confirmed the construction of a health center in Machu Picchu town will begin this month.

This project entails an investment worth S/29 million (about US$8.73 million) and will contribute to delivering high-quality health services to Peruvian citizens and tourists.

In addition, the statesman recalled that the Executive Branch signed a supreme decree declaring the construction of Cusco's Antonio Lorena Hospital of national interest.

"We are going to give priority to this important infrastructure for (the benefit of) Cusco citizens," he added.
