Peru PM: The opportunity to make the necessary changes lies in Congress

12:44 | Lima, Sep. 4

Prime Minister Cesar Villanueva on Tuesday affirmed the opportunity to make the changes the Inca country needs lies in Congress.

According to him, these will be achieved if the justice reform bills —submitted by the Executive Branch to Parliament— are prioritized and then subjected to a referendum

Said bills are a necessity and an essential issue for the country, not a whim from the Executive Branch, the official stated.

"We highly respect the democratic process, we want to carry this out within the framework of the Constitution, without any political ventures. That's why we have submitted these initiatives to Congress," Villanueva expressed.

As is known, all National Council of the Magistracy (CNM) members were dismissed following a scandal. The CNM is an organization in charge of appointing judges in the Inca country. Thus, the reform is regarded as an urgent matter

On the other hand, he clarified Parliament is not being forced, nor is it caught between a rock and a hard place. Therefore, it is a reminder that this issue is a priority for the country.

He added that —even though Peruvian economy is growing— it could be affected by instability or uncertainty.

"We are in time to take a national collective responsibility," Villanueva added.

Remarks were made during the 125th National Agreement Forum, the space to reach consensus.
