Peru President urges decisions rather than delaying reforms

11:12 | Lima, Sep. 4.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday urged all sectors not to postpone political and justice reforms requested by the population and said the Government's proposed referendum will give legitimacy to such an important process.

Speaking at the National Agreement Forum —convened to discuss the issue— Vizcarra underlined this is the moment to make decisions in the justice and political realms, as well as in the fight against corruption.

"It is time for us —the decision-makers— to take responsibility and not to postpone this anymore (…). We cannot miss this opportunity (…). We cannot let Peruvians down one more time," he noted.

Speaking before Government representatives, political parties, and civil society, the statesman emphasized the fight against corruption is a unanimous responsibility, so he urged them to put individual priorities aside in favor of the population.

According to him, the fight against corruption and the strengthening of institutions constitute one of his administration's key focuses set when he took office last March.

"(…) I think we are moving in the right direction. We can have economic growth, take a decentralized approach, implement good social policies, but if we lack solid institutions and a frontal struggle against corruption, all this cannot be sustained over time and welfare becomes ephemeral," he warned.

The National Agreement Forum is intended to review political and justice reform projects proposed by the Executive Branch.

Held at the Government Palace in Lima, the session was attended by Congress Third Vice-Chairwoman Yeni Vilcatoma, on behalf of the Chairman Daniel Salaverry.
