Some 15,000 teachers will be hired by the Ministry of Education to assist the needs of public schools providing Intercultural Bilingual Education (EIB), in favor of 53 indigenous Peruvian communities, totaling over 1 million students.

Professionals will be progressively incorporated into the program thru 2021, the Education Ministry’s representative Elena Burga affirmed.

There are currently 45,000 teachers "working on the EIB" field; however, the educational system requires a total of 60,000, the official indicated on Wednesday, when the Native Languages Day was celebrated in Peru.
"Therefore, the Ministry of Education will progressively recruit other members. Thus, the Ministry will pick 4,300 teachers next year, who will begin to work in 2017," she stated.

According to Burga, these new pedagogues should be able to speak one of the 47 Peruvian native languages. Currently, the 20,000 EIB schools assist 1,084,000 students.
In this sense, the Education Ministry works to meet the demand for EIB teachers.

“The teacher training program has been reactivated. To date, there are 30 pedagogical institutes and 9 universities offering a career on Intercultural Bilingual Education. Even, a specialization course has been added to the Beca 18 system, so youngsters can opt for this career [...]," she said.

Additionally, 45,000 EIB teachers are trained to improve teaching skills. “The Ministry of Education has conducted a specialization program for 1,700 bilingual pedagogues and has planned to offer diplomat studies next year," added Ms. Burga.

In 2013, working material for Pre- and Elementary schools in 7 indigenous languages was produced. In 2014, material in 5 additional languages was designed," she added.
