Chiclayo, the northern city of Peru, was recognized by peruvian law as the spiritual cradle of Pope Leo XIV. The same law also declares the implementation of the tourist-cultural route called "Paths of Pope Leo XIV" to be of national interest.

This is stated in Law 32472, which appears in the separate edition of the legal regulations of the Official Gazette El Peruano, published today.

This law was approved by the Congress of the Republic and promulgated by the Government.

The law states that the recognition of Chiclayo—the capital city of the Lambayeque district—as the spiritual cradle of Pope Leo XIV responds "to its symbolic and religious value."

Chiclayo, located 777 kilometers north of Lima, the capital of Peru, and just an hour away by plane, is also known as the "Capital of Friendship."

Its people are very religious, and Catholic parishioners always attend mass in the churches of this welcoming city.

Cultural route

Likewise, it is specified in the law that the implementation of the tourist-cultural route called "Paths of Pope Leo XIV" be declared to be of national interest.

This includes cultural and religious sites in the Constitutional Province of Callao and in the departments of La Libertad, Lambayeque, and Piura.

The Ministries of Culture and Foreign Trade and Tourism, the corresponding regional and local governments, are responsible for coordinating, within the framework of their respective powers and responsibilities, the actions corresponding to these declarations.

As you may recall, before being appointed Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church, Cardinal Robert Prevost carried out service activities in Chiclayo.

Among these activities are actions to benefit those affected by the floods caused in Lambayeque between 2016 and 2027 by the rains resulting from the El Niño phenomenon.

Leo XIV also provided aid to the population of Lambayeque during the COVID-19 pandemic, promoting a campaign—called "Oxygen of Hope"—that led to the acquisition of two oxygen generating plants.
