Peru has once again risen to the top of the world tourism rankings. The prestigious travel guide Lonely Planet included it in its annual "Best in Travel 2026" list, where Peru stands out among the 25 most recommended destinations to visit in 2026.
Peru's selection is due to a combination of factors ranging from its ancient history and diverse landscapes to a renewed sustainable and authentic tourism offering.
In its publication, Lonely Planet highlights the experience of exploring the country beyond Machu Picchu, our tourist emblem and one of the seven wonders of the world.

The publication invites travelers to discover lesser-known gems such as the Peruvian Amazon, Huaraz (Áncash), Arequipa, or the gastronomic routes of Lima.
It also highlights that in Peru, tourists can find historical monuments, modern cities, cultural traditions, and unique, internationally recognized cuisine.

The Lonely Planet article also mentions that "for visitors, getting around Peru has never been easier, thanks to a series of infrastructure developments, including new airports in both the capital, Lima, and Huaraz, the jumping-off point for reaching Huascarán and other snow-capped mountains."
It also mentions that three new circuits, with 10 tourist routes, have been implemented in Machu Picchu, in an effort to combat overtourism and diversify the offerings.
Finally, it highlights that visitors can hike little-known trails and reach incredible places like Choquequirao and enjoy the cobblestone path of Qhapaq Ñan.
The video produced in English by Lonely Planet about Peru features Virgilio Martinez, recognized as the best chef in the world in 2023 by the 50 Best Restaurants guide, thanks to his innovative approach to Peruvian gastronomy, who takes a tour of Cusco and its diverse attractions.
